Ananda Gaorii Ashram, Farm and Learning Center is a project of Ananda Marga, a spiritual and social service organization with a network of projects around the world including yoga and meditation centers, schools, children's homes, disaster relief and local development.
Ananda Gaorii is located near the small town of Vig in the Danish countryside an hour’s drive from Copenhagen (1 hour and 40 minutes by train). Our community consists of three Sannyasis (yoga monks) and usually between 10 to 20 short and long term volunteers. During retreats and seminars our population increases to anywhere from 30 to 200. We have thirteen hectares of land some of which we rent to our neighbors (who are organic and biodynamic farmers) and some of which we use ourselves. We have a small orchard and we are experimenting with different types of growing systems growing food for ourselves as well as for market. We also have an organic bakery and deliver bread and cakes to our shops in Copenhagen and a nearby town.
Our main focus at Ananda Gaorii is to offer experiential learning in the fields of spirituality, community, self-reliance and sustainability. We have a daily routine of yoga, chanting and meditation and weekly activities such as yoga teacher training, classes on yoga philosophy, community sharing and cultural evenings. We meet every morning for some sharing and planning the work for the day. Our main jobs at the moment are developing the garden, renovating the ashram and hosting retreats and seminars. Cooking, cleaning and maintaining the ashram also take up time. As part of our community outreach we invite young refugees separated from their parents to visit us and participate in activities created by the volunteers.
As far as recreation is concerned we are a short drive (and a 20 minute bike ride) to a long and beautiful beach, there are a couple of nice forests within walking and biking distance, we are 5 minutes from the town of Vig, and Copenhagen is an hour and forty minutes by public transport. For those of you who like horse riding, the local vet uses some of our fields to graze her horses and she is happy to lend us riding equipment if we request.
Ananda Gaorii is an ashram so we are looking for volunteers who have an interest in meditation and yoga and who are willing to make an effort to learn and practice on a daily basis. Chanting and meditating together helps to maintain the spiritual flow in the ashram and strengthen the feeling of connectedness among the residents. So we consider it an important part of community life to participate in the collective meditation and chanting. Meditating on a regular basis is a challenge and needs some commitment. Please consider if you are ready for such a challenge before signing up to volunteer at Ananda Gaorii.
Right now we are starting an exciting project growing veggies for the Copenhagen veggie coop and we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help in the garden. Those who are interested can do a six month apprenticeship in commercial organic food growing under the guidance of our garden leader who will also give you training in permaculture. We also need volunteers who can help with building and renovation.
Note: At present we collect most of our food from dumpsters (fruit, veggies, and dairy products). We have fresh bread from our own bakery and we buy things like rice and beans. We are planting a lot of veggies this year and aim to be self-sufficient in veggies fairly soon. However, right now we rely a lot on the dumpsters. So, be sure that's okay with you before signing up.
